Gearing Up For The Ice Age

Given the ghastly weather and my impending retirement , coupled with a new tendency to creak when cold , I've been looking for a knitting pattern . A while ago , Friend , having discovered that mohair made her sneeze , passed on a couple of big bags of Phildar Phil'Douce that she'd found when clearing out her attic . Two sweaters worth !

Now I can , at most , knit a scarf unaided but this naturally has not stopped me collecting a large number of old knitting patterns over the years . So this afternoon I hauled them all out and started hunting for a simple pattern for a warm jumper . Preferably one that I could finish in a couple of weeks .... or sooner . Something basic with sleeves long enough to keep my wrists warm but loose enough to allow for movement . There was this

although I was really looking for something more dignified and less mohairy . Finally narrowed it down to these ....

a couple were even in something called Fuzzy Wuzzy that sounded like mohair and used the same size needles. Promising .

So I think I've settled on this ....

though it seems to have seven buttons , which seems to indicate the need to knit a button band and seven buttonholes .

On second thoughts , it might be easier to try to remember my Ravelry password .

Oh all that button band and buttonhole stuff will be in the instructions. You'll be finished with one before you know you've done it.
I like that hair and makeup too. Do they give instructions for that?

Those whacky, Bill Cosby style jumpers are coming back into fashion! Although, the other does have a much more sophisticated "Mad Men' feel about it. Go saucy and sophisticated, I'm sure you are up to the button and band challenge.

Love it, it's just the one I'd have chosen. If you don't want to knit buttonholes then cheat. Do 2 plain bands and sew on the buttons with big press studs behind them, you can buy clear plastic studs that should blend in nicely!
(And if you get stuck there's loads of people who can help....I will)

You're all so encouraging ! I'm sorely tempted ... the wool feels so cosy .
Actually the cheat button idea is good in many ways . Simpler and with the bonus of being able to rummage through button stash and not having to settle on the only biggish ones I have seven of .
June , I think I can still just about remember how to get the panda eyes but the hair ?
Mrs. Smith , I'd definitely rather look sophisticated than Bill Cosby ! Though there's rather a danger that I'll end up Val Doonican-ish .

Ah, mohair! But is it not knitted on big needles so it will soon be done? Buttonholes in knitting are nowhere near the big deal of sewn buttonholes.
Have we heard you mention impending retirement before?

Word has it that it's cold and damp and chilly over there. Do you think I'd finish a warm woolly jumper in a week? Or just leave room in my suitcase for some sunshine?

On third thoughts, it might be even easier to buy a warm cardi, certainly for this clumsy-fingered non-knitter.

Good luck and show us the finished object.

Yes, go for it! You can have your hair done too and buy a new lipstick to complete the look.

I only know my ravelry password because I have it written down. I love the pattern but am not sure you are allowed to knit in summer. Isn't gardening compulsory, on pain of death? Maybe I should move to a smaller place....

I don't think even cold and impending retirement would get me knitting. Do a jigsaw instead.
Lovely colour though. Do show us the finished product.

And do try to avoid getting an ernear (verifier) (read it aloud) while doing it.
