You're Only As Old As You Feel

Sonata:

We probably all have an age we'd like to be , the age which we picture as The Best Years Of One's Life . And if it were simply a matter of Positive Thinking , how easy it would be . My grandson would be FIVE , the age he'll know everything and be ABSOLUTELY grown-up . I'd settle for my thirties , I think .

But , of course , it's not that simple . He'll have to wait another year-and-twentyfour-days and I can whistle . But I was encouraged this week by a couple of television moments . A BBC series about lesser known Stately Homes had the spritely presenter , Dan Cruikshank , negotiating a secret spiral staircase carrying a brimming chamber pot with his customary enthusiasm . And then the two Geriatric Greedy Italians galloped all over Turin , making and eating enormous plates of delicious food .... as Carluccio said , with Mof Mof ( minimum of fuss , maximum of flavour ) .... and a schoolboy joke involving a camera and a fountain .

I , mind you , do seem to be going backwards all of a sudden . Much to my dental hygienist's amusement I'm , rather painfully , growing a wisdom tooth .

So , instead of the wondrous French anti wrinkle powder shown at the beginning ( just add a drop of water , mix and spread liberally over your wrinkles , rinse off and astonish the world ) , I'm off tomorrow to buy Calpol and a teething ring .

What, no motherly hand to rub Bonjela on your throbbing gums? How sad....

Ooooh, poor you. I remember when mine came through, the bloke I worked with was at the same stage of life (early twenties). We sat with a shared stash of ibuprofen and Anbesol (adult strength). He, being a man, wasn't up to much and moaned a great deal. But then he had perfect teeth and had never had a single thing done to them. Ever.
Just out of interest, where may I obtain some of that powder...?

I love you. The sheer unexpectedness of you. And because of the laughter. You've put the bow on top of my morning, S&S.

In the good old bad old days they used to give babies gin for teething - just a thought! You've worried me somewhat though because I only have three wisdom teeth and have always assumed the fourth will never grow. Hmmm (prods gum speculatively...)

Oh, sweetpea. I am appalled at your misfortune. I am also quieting the holier-than-thou air I get whenever wisdom teeth are mentioned and I declare that I am fortunate never to have grown through that phase.

Hi there you incredible person ~ do let us know what else you grow will you. I had to have one of mine removed, last year on my birthday.

I'm another of the lucky (?) few who has never grown a wisdom tooth.
Yet I am wise beyond my years.

And don't forget the rusks. I think you can buy teddy bear shaped ones these days.

You poor thing. That is just not fair. I would struggle to choose an age. I like being the age I am now, and have always felt like that. Ideally I might have the body I had twenty years ago though.

Love your sketch! Does that mean you become wiser?

If I could get rid of my wrinkles I would be totally happy at my age - 58 - because I am so much more confident and relaxed in myself now than I ever was.

OOOOHHHH so painful what a way to keep young but maybe becasue they grow unexpectedly in our more mature years that is why they are called wisdom teeth....;)

An age we'd like to be? I am always surprised to look at photos of the younger me: slimmer, less wrinkled. How come I did not appreciate it at the time? So it will be looking back at now, when one is older and less mobile.
