Penny Plain , Twopence Coloured

Sonata:

Well , perhaps not always ...Friend and I have just been to the exhibition " Alaia . Alaia Azzedine in de 21e Eeuw " ( in the 21st Century ) in the Groninger Museum . It's a catch-up on the highlights of his creations in the last ten years , the museum having held a big exhibition of his work in 1998 , which I was lucky enough to have seen .
His evening dresses are stunning , each one calling up visions of Oscars , red carpets and Rita Hayworth .

The craftsmanship and eye for detail are impressive .

So no , I doubt that you'd get even a plain black one for a penny ......

Whereas today's Twopence Coloured really only cost 69 cents . A bag of Rainbow carrots grown locally , which I steamed and dressed with caraway , parsley and lemon juice à la 64 foot kitchen ( see our side bar for the link to her blog ) .

Delicious , especially with freshly ground black pepper from my new , and very nifty one-handed pepper mill .

Yeah yeah, nice frocks - but oh - those carrots! Divine!

I dream of being in a fabulous evening dress at a ball in Vienna with gloves past my elbows (did I tell you this before?) The black one would do nicely although they probably wouldn't let me in the door in anything but white.
And where on earth do rainbow carrots get their colours from? Are they like those lovely Gerber daisies in mauve and fuschia?

Oooh, lovely dresses. Can I go to Vienna with Deborah, please?

If I live on veg do you think I might fit in a hire dress version, and be able to afford to rent an escort! Sorry, had a glass of wine. Now must dash and colour my roots and make my cocoa.

Not envious in the least; those dresses would only cover half of me in Vienna or anywhere else.

I'll eat carrots instead.

And weep bitter tears into them.

My knees are completely--non hyperbolically--weak from the photos in this post. The dresses are swoon-worthy, as are the carrots. Num.

Oh... to have the figure that fits in one of those dresses... *sigh*... Not to mention the money to buy one. Or the occasion to wear one. Such luxury :-)

One thing that's always pissed me off about designers... they want to charge enormous sums for bits of cloth that will only cover one third of a normal-sized human woman. How do they ever make any money selling dresses? Does anyone really wear that stuff? It's all so confusing.

But - on to the carrots. I had no idea that carrots came in any color other than orange! How fascinating!

Isn't it great to be able to see gorgeous frocks close up? Love the V&A for that. But 'tis the carrots that I most desire.

Purple carrots are the bees knees. But a one-handed pepper mill takes the cake.

Oh, to be tall and slender enough to wear one of those gorgeous dresses - and to live somewhere where I would have the opportunity to wear it! A black one preferably to set off my lovely pearls.

If you could arrange for me to be painted by John Singer Sargent too I would be in ecstasy.

I'd never have anywhere to wear it but i'd love to try one of those glam dresses. A really good designer would make you look stunning whatever you looked like to begin with right?

A one-handed pepper mill?
